Legendary Hollywood film-maker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday, prompting a police investigation.
Emergency services were called to the property in the Brentwood neighbourhood on the afternoon of 14 December, where a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not officially confirmed the identities of the deceased but said a homicide investigation has been opened.
Police said no arrests have been made and no suspect or person of interest is currently being sought. Details surrounding the deaths have not been disclosed, and officers declined to comment on possible causes or injuries.
According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department, crews responded to a medical aid call at approximately 3:38pm local time. Detectives from the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division also attended the scene.
Entertainment outlet TMZ reported that the couple suffered injuries consistent with knife wounds, citing unnamed sources. Police have not confirmed this information.
In a statement released to US media, a family spokesperson said:
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss and ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”
Reiner is widely celebrated for directing classic films including The Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was “heartbroken” by the deaths, describing Reiner as a “big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.” Former US President Barack Obama also paid tribute, praising the couple’s lifelong commitment to purpose and values.
The investigation remains ongoing.
