Music Mogul Jay-Z Reveals Name Change Tied to Personal Story
Jay-Z has introduced a subtle update to his stage name ahead of an upcoming performance with The Roots.
The hip-hop icon has added an umlaut to his name, now appearing as “JAĊ¸-Z” on promotional material for the annual Roots Picnic, set to take place in Philadelphia on 30 May.
The adjustment isn’t limited to event billing. The artist, born Shawn Carter, has also updated his name across major streaming platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal, to reflect the revised styling.
The change appears to be a nod to his early career. Artwork from his debut era including his 1996 album Reasonable Doubt and singles such as “Ain’t No N---a,” “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” and “Feelin’ It” — featured a similar umlaut in his name.
This is not the first time the rapper has experimented with how his name is presented. In 2013, he notably removed the hyphen, explaining in an interview that it had become outdated and unnecessary.
He also mentioned at the time that he had previously used umlauts but chose to drop them as part of evolving his brand.
The hyphen later returned for his 2017 album 4:44, marking yet another shift in how his name was stylized. At that point, his team emphasized a return to the all-caps “JAY-Z,” signaling a refreshed identity while maintaining ties to his legacy.
